I find it fascinating when I step into any Catholic Church around the world, there are often subtle artistic differences in the way that the Mother Mary is portrayed in paintings, tapestries and sculptures.
During my recent visit to the magestic Monastery of the Basilian Fathers in Zhovkva, Ukraine, the depiction of Mary diverged substantially from the paintings in western Europe. Here Mary is dressed in Ukrainian blue and gold. Her facial features are slavic, her skin is pale and her hair is blonde. It was a not so subtle but beautiful portrayal of a patriotic Ukrainian Mother of Christ.
